edibleRed RELEASES GROUNDBREAKING NEW MUSIC VIDEO "SUGAR AND SPRING" IN 3D
To celebrate the release of their debut single "Sugar and Spring," edibleRed sought a concept for a music video that would set them apart from the pack. Even before brainstorming ideas, the band decided the video would make use of the band's signature style, boundless energy and love for New York City, their home base. The resulting video is currently available on the web and can be viewed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iraRbAUs00.
[ClickPress, Wed May 16 2007] To celebrate the release of their debut single "Sugar and Spring," edibleRed sought a concept for a music video that would set them apart from the pack. Even before brainstorming ideas, the band decided the video would make use of the band's signature style, boundless energy and love for New York City, their home base. The resulting video is currently available on the web and can be viewed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iraRbAUs00.
"Sugar and Spring" is a metaphorical song about love and addiction," explains lead singer/songwriter Collette McLafferty. "I wanted to capture the range of emotions people go through in relationships, from elation to pure hell. Sugar can provide an initial rush and is sweet on the surface but can deplete you in the end. Spring also provides an initial rush on its arrival but can provoke all kinds of nastiness...coughing, wheezing, etcetera. It can really mess with you. So can love!"
With that in mind, Select Records President Fred Munao reviewed storyboard ideas from a host of music video directors, but when blue-chip production company Green Street Pictures (www.greenstreetpictures.com) came through he knew he had the perfect concept. In a modern take on the use of a green-screen, company founders Jay Cornelius and Matt Bockelman employed a technique they call "freeze frame photo animation."
"What makes this music video unique is that no actual film or video was involved," described Cornelius. "We took digital photos in the field and studio and selected shots of backgrounds, foregrounds and band members that would work together. We then started cutting them apart in photoshop." After scanning over 10,000 photos into the animation program After Effects, the video pioneers digitally inserted the band members into the photography. In the end, over 1,000 individual photos were used to compile the three-and-a-half minute clip. Cornelius reveals the inspiration for this new form of music video experimentation. "I first noticed the technique in 'The Kid Stays in the Picture,' a documentary about movie mogul Robert Evans. I've been looking to incorporate it into my own work ever since."
Cornelius and Bockelman have a resume that features past work with television networks such as A&E, Discovery-Times Channel, The History Channel and Trio. Recently they have edited a music video for Kool Keith that aired on MtvU and Bockelman assistant directed the Emmy award winning Trouble No More John Mellencamp documentary for PBS.
The music video for "Sugar and Spring" is being distributed through Rive Video Distribution. The Select Records debut, Welcome to My Bad Behavior, is available now.
